Emergy Evaluation of Treatment Methods for Solid Medical Waste in Bujumbura-Burundi

Introduction: Treatment of solid medical waste (SMW) is a complex task requiring the proper practices with specific treatment methods corresponding to each type SMW during pretreatment and final treatment. This study targeted three identified as main used by majority health care facilities (HCFs) treating large amount SMW. It aimed: 1) evaluate current calculating emergy investment costs that are required treat one ton through 2) compare better technologies provide policy suggestions for in Burundi. Materials Methods: methodology relative efficiencies twelve HCFs Bujumbura. Results Conclusion: The total input was 1.36E+20 seJ/yr, 3.54E+17 1.681E+18 seJ/yr low temperature incinerator, landfill organic pit, respectively. Rapid improvement pit ensuring its maintenance, gradual replacement incinerator high air control pollution sanitary highly recommended respecting maintenance (fence, roof monitoring evaluation) reducing risk.
